a single word for cannabis

Weed, pot, hash, ganja, marijuana, cannabis.

These are the most commonly used names for the same production of the same plant besides thousands of other names called by millions of people. Since it is an illegalized plant for many decades and since words for illegal entities are mostly pronounced in disguise, and since every illegalized thing (especially if it is creditable for a signicifant share in societal creation) has a high affinity for sub- or counter-cultural formations; the names calling the substance are varied and even diversified.

Nevertheless, it is pretty much clear why we have so many colloquial words for a single drug derived from the single plant.

However in science the entities "must be" distinguished and named accurately. Although some of the findings (such as mental illnesses or the effectiveness of the drug Ritalin) which are described, differantiated and named by science authorities are highly controversial, cannabis is not one of them. It is a plant very easy to identify, its crops are used for various purposes for centuries with almost no unexpected effects and it contains major two compounds responsible for these effects. Also these compounds and their organic behaviours are more or less described and well documented.

So, since it is obvious we are not talking about different substances under the names of "cannabis", "cannabinoids" and " marijuana", then why does a researcher need to search for all three of these keywords in order to find answers on the same substance?

It is clear that we need a standardized scientific name for this drug.
